But that's because anyone who truly loves something has strong opinions on it. Also, I think doc's post made me laugh. Ps: Popwar saying 'my opinion' and having a big lebowski avatar made me smile. I have nothing against longboarders. I used to longboard, until I got more into skating. I agree, there are some skaters that are huge elitists though. I think longboarders are cool, hell, fucking anything is fine with me, as long as you're not snaking at parks and doing stupid shit.
Its really the person, not the group. Yeah maybe I am an elitest and even pretentious because of my skateboarding backround but I didn't refuse to go cruising with my friends because they longboard. We had a good time together kicking it together.
However I personally will always consider a skateboard superior because you can engage much more of your environment around you and there's so many more possibilities. With longboarding there's too many limits, and not a lot of diversity. I like to experiment a lot with different obstacles and tricks to try to create something that's completely unique. A couple years ago I envisioned in my mind a trick I had thought to try manual calfwrap out. When I first started trying it didn't really seem possible, getting the scoop so I could wrap it around my leg wouldn't work, I basically kept smashing the board into my shin for hours.
The feeling of landing it for the first time after all that toil was amazing, how can I get that with a longboard? A longboard doesn't over me enough of a challenge, it wouldn't be stimulating enough for me. Just judging by the recent posts, it seems like people who actively skateboard on a 'traditional' board, aren't stoked on longboarding because it's limitations. And people who don't skateboard enjoy the freedom of smooth riding on a longer board, that limits tricks. Longboards aren't limited, they're just not designed with the idea to do the same tricks.
It's not limitations, it's a different specialization and design. To say they are "limited" is just ignorant to the purpose these skateboards serve, which is different from your more popular twin tailed board. If you're trying to argue that longboards are in fact skateboards, then a longboards specifications do in fact limit its use. However, that's not a bad thing. Seems like people who buy longboards have no interested in doing ollies and other 'normal' tricks, hints why their picking something that isn't specific to those.
It almost seems like no matter what I say, you're going to ignore it, grab 1 piece of information, then try to argue it. The point of this thread is to share personal opinions, not debate someone elses. But longboarding isn't skateboarding, and longboarders think that too. You can get just as much of a challenge on a longboard, just in different ways. Pushing yourself to go faster and faster, to take turns faster, slide further, etc all yields the same feeling of success.
Personally, I had been working on rotation variations, and after doing a frontside check slide for the first time something I've never seen done on soft wheels , I felt amazing. Especially after working on them for a long ass time.
Longboard's aren't limited by any means. Yeah you might not be able ollie it, but I'd bet anything a longboard is going to be able to go faster, offer more control for slides at speed, and take turns better at speed. They're both skateboards, but they have completely different purposes. To me, a "skateboard" would be extremely limiting since it doesn't fit my style of riding.
They sell overpriced, shit quality boards, blow out spots, and make up bullshit reasoning to justify their insane pricing. However less stability in the long run.
Hints why cruisers can go just as fast as a longboard. Also, I think you're missing the point I was trying to make in my post. Aka : Longboards are limited for 'normal' skateboarding. However that's ok simply because that's not what they were originally designed for. People who buy longboards aren't looking to do 'normal' skateboarding, because if they were, they'd just buy a 'normal' skateboard..
The reason someone buys a longboard is because they want something else from the act, so the limitations are fine. Plus the size is super unappealing to me, seeing people walk through small stores holding a 43inch longboard is completely ridiculous. Longboards are cool. I've got a couple older longboards I still ride every now and again. I also live in one of those college towns with tons of the "college longboarder" types. Like a few people have said they definitely have some undeserved elitist attitude.
Most of the ones here are jocko frat boy types. I think they have definitely killed something that could be really cool. Brad Edwards is a pretty sick skateboarder, can do shit on a longboard most people could never do on a normal board.
He rips pools on 40" boards. Sergio Yuppie is a pretty sick skateboarder too. I think people's judgement of longboarding is clouded by the fact that so many idiots ride them.
Riding a cruiser bicycle is bicycling, as is riding a mountain bike. Driving a Sport Bike is driving a motorcycle, as is driving a Harley. Playing an acoustic six string is playing guitar, as is playing an electric six string. Riding a longboard is skateboarding, as is riding a modern day skateboard. My point is, you cannot say a longboard is not a skateboard.
The sport has always been Skateboarding. Even when they were riding around on banana boards, large pool boards with single kicks, and Just because a longboard isn't the shape of the most modernly used and recognized type of skateboard, doesn't mean it isn't a "skateboard". I don't get why it's so offensive to say.. Fine, I'll even put aside my opinion and say. When you're riding a longboard, you're longboarding. Longboards are designed specifically to be different than skateboards.
So why not call it something different? Like mentioned many times above, meeting people who say they 'skateboard' only to find out they ride longboards, is completely wrong and confusing. If you're doing something specifically different, wouldn't you want to be referred to as so? Amen Broskii! Every sport has it's recreational or dare I say it I don't understand how some skaters, who are very familiar with this concept, can make such a stereotype about longboarding as a whole :-!?
Well I really don't like when people place stereotypes upon a given group of individuals I have 2 friends that longboard, they told me skating was to0 hard so they went to longboarding and scootering.
I've never ridden a longboard in my life, but I've met quite a few longboarders and they're really cool and relaxed people. In my opinion, longboarding IS a form of skateboarding, but it is so radically different that I can see why some people think its not.
But you need to look at it this way: You can bomb a hill on a street deck, while impractical, is possible, and it is still skateboarding. You can bomb the same hill on a longboard that is purpose built for the occasion, and it is no less skateboarding.
Same sport, different tools. In fairness, it's totally true that most longboarders don't identify with the black t-shirt, girl's jeans sullen clone at the mall who has to carry his board because it won't roll over rough pavement.
I know this post is suppose to be silly. But to be fair most skaters don't even look like that. The easiest generalization of skaters now is like Haha I still don't get why this needed it's own section It's alot smoother, you have more control down hills, and there's more room to step around cross steppin and hang tens and sex changes are fun. It's alot less tiring. So in other words, a lot of people dress pretty average. My point exactly. I know, and I'm not arguing with dtj. Yes, it comes down to niggling little points such as using the wrong words because, like an old married couple who just loath each other, we pick on every little fault of yours.
A traditional skateboard only has one shape and appearance whereas longboards have a seemingly endless variety; and some look like Dr. When picking out a board, for the love of god, take aesthetics into consideration. It ruins both the bearings and the deck itself. Whenever mine gets even remotely near a puddle, I worry. But getting it wet is equal to murder. So someone cruising down the street in the middle of a rain storm, to me, looks like a complete asshole.
Same difference. If the board you bought strictly requires you to pick it up using your hands when confronted with any obstacle, throw it in the river and buy a new one, or just let us kick it into on-coming traffic for you. A traditional skateboard only has a universal shape.
But the appearance of longboards has seemingly endless variety, and some are uglier than the other variety. Having an ugly board is pretty embarrassing for us. That is why some skateboarders never wanted longboarders to enter their group. Skateboarders think that if some newbie sees an ugly board inside the skating community, the newbie will never join the community. In short, skateboarders reject longboarders because their ugly boards will never attract newbies. That is why I suggest longboarders who read my article buy an amazing and enticing board.
Never buy from companies that create ugly boards that only want to earn lots of money. Never buy from a department store too. Buy longboards from a trusted company. Also, avoid putting large cruiser wheels on a trick board because it will look like you are riding on a monster truck. Skateboarders are indeed toxic, but not all of them. I have met skateboarders who are arrogant, and some are humble and look like they have no ego at all.
The humble skateboarders I have met are likable people in their community, and they usually have many friends outside their community.
The main reason why this hatred exists is that skateboarders are toxic! However, let us not put all the blame on skateboarders since some longboarders are also toxic. This toxicity must stop because it makes the image of both communities dirty. Both skateboard and longboard offer tons of fun to their users. It is a great way to make friends, even though it is an individual sport. Both skateboard and longboard have trucks, wheels, decks, bearings, and some interchangeable parts.
You can put longboard wheels on a skateboard and begin cruising. However, if you want to try this, you have to make sure to add riser pads. However, they are not both easy. Longboarding is easier compared to skateboarding because longboards are wider and longer. The longer and wider the board, the easier it is to balance oneself.
What about freestylers? Then again I have seen longboarders kickflipping and catching airtime. Before the handstands and barrel jumps it was all cruising and downhill! Just because of this thread I relearned my footplant longboard trick on a freestyle shape. This guy is an innovator I don't see anybody does this kinda stuff nowadays. December I definitely respect Longboarders, there are quite a few cool tricks.
But when i see a video of someone doing a line with no complies, old school kickflips and even CASPERS on his longboard, i just think "you should just have gotten a skateboard instead of making it so much harder and weirder for yourself".
No hate tho, just my opinion. I still respect them, especially the downhill stuff. Thats way too fast for a freestyle skateboarder like me tho lmao.
