Every summer, the Cut has interviewed makeup artists about how to sweat-proof your makeup. As the temperatures climb, your makeup bag should get lighter. Less makeup means less opportunity for drippage.
It was degrees when Solange performed for Coachella. Her makeup artist Dana Delaney used just five makeup products on her face. Makeup artist Tyron Machhausen took the same approach on the day of our sweaty, Central Park cover shoot with Sonoya Mizuno. Delaney particularly likes this one from Laura Mercier , which you can use to conceal anything from dark eye circles to larger cystic bumps.
But if you are looking for full-coverage makeup options, you might want to try all those products that brag about multiple-hour-longwear. Makeup artist Beau Nelson explains that longwear products, specifically foundation, have improved lately and no longer look spackled on. Swipe this over any areas of shine for an instant matte finish. Pre-warning though, you might end up buying two, one for your desk and one for your handbag. If you use blotting sheets and end up with tiny pieces of greasy, screwed up paper in your bag, you might want to switch to this.
We love the original Beautyblender for applying our foundation, but this new tool is actually a blotting cushion. It looks like a squashed Beautyblender, but the egg shape makes it easy to get into every contour of the face and soak up any excess oil and sweat nice. If you're applying moisturiser and foundation within 5 minutes in the morning, your makeup is going to slip right off. If you do apply moisturiser in the morning you need to give it time to sink in, before you apply your makeup.
Personally, I skip moisturiser altogether in the morning because my oily skin doesn't need it. As a beauty team, we are always trying different foundations. If a foundation breaks down on my skin by mid-afternoon I know it's not the right one for me.
I use a primer every single day because I know it will help my foundation last longer. If you don't use one and have problems with your makeup lasting, I highly recommend investing. If that's a out of your budget it has actual gold in it! Setting sprays might seem a bit gimmicky but like primers, I swear they actually work.
It's not necessarily a step I would do every day, but if I know my makeup is going to be put to the test I always finish my makeup routine with a few sprays. And it provides SPF 15 for a little added protection! Did you know there are also primers specifically for eyes? Apply a thin layer of eye primer to a clean and moisturized face around the entire eye area underneath too before starting face makeup.
Next, set your arches with a coat of clear waterproof eyebrow sealer. It will also guard against eyeshadow creasing.
I recommend a long-lasting eyeshadow. When it comes to eyeliner , a waterproof gel or liquid formula is your best friend. If you prefer a pencil or want a softer look, choose a waterproof one and set it with a similar-colored shadow or powder. Mascara can have a mind of its own throughout the day. It ends up on our eyelids, smudged under our eyes, or running into the corners. Good news — there are topcoats available that will make any mascara waterproof so you can have flawless eyes while remaining brand loyal.
Speaking of loyalty, this Blinc Mascara is one of my favorites! This mascara gives your lashes length and volume as well as outstanding all day wear! Much like your face, starting with exfoliated lips will help lipstick go on smoother and prevent cracking or flaking.
You can buy a lip exfoliator or make your own exfoliant by making a paste of baking soda and water or mixing some sugar and coconut oil. Using a soft toothbrush not your regular toothbrush, keep this one separate , a wet washcloth, or your finger, apply exfoliant and gently scrub lips in a circular motion.
Rinse with lukewarm water and follow up with a moisturizing lip balm. Start by applying a thin layer of foundation or concealer to lips. This will not only act as a primer for lip color, it will also make it more vivid. Look for a long-lasting lip color. Lip liners can really up your long-wear game by keeping lipstick from migrating outward onto the skin.
Make friends with reverse lining. This step includes using a concealer or nude liner to trace the outside edge of the lips which creates a barrier and prevents color bleeding. Finally, to really lock things in place, set your lip color with powder. Place over lips and, using a soft brush, press a translucent setting powder on top of the tissue which will allow a light dusting through to your lip color.
The last way on how to make makeup last all day is to lock everything in place with a makeup setting spray once you have completed applying your makeup. Model in a Bottle Original Formula has been featured on a variety of TV shows including Oprah and Extra for its amazing ability to lock your look in place. It resists smudging, tears, humidity, and water and renders touchups useless. It will leave you set and ready to go! It can be super frustrating to spend time applying a full face of makeup only to have it melt off or disappear throughout the day.
