The area is relatively undiscovered and it is surrounded by a unique and very beautiful landscape with mountains and huge lakes. It is part of the Gaeltacht Irish-speaking region in Joyce Country. The lakes are popular among trout and salmon anglers, and the highlight of the angling year is the Mayfly hatch which takes place between the end of April and the end of May.

Nearby villages include Cong, Clonbur and Maum, which are pretty rural villages and great places to visit while exploring the area.
